Welcome to www.theBlueLightDistrict.com.

The Blue Light District is an independent platform for music and art providing support services to people in creative roles.

We are a collective of creatives formed on a foundation of similar ideas and ideals; our numbers include: musicians, artists, film makers, animators, actors, performers, graphic designers, computer programmers, writers, journalists, photographers, poets, comedians, promoters, publicans, printers, podcasters, producers, performers, sound engineers, DJs, VJs and a whole lot more!

Recently celebrating our second year of operations, we’ve been fortunate to be involved in an ever growing spectrum of events since birth. As well as setting up exhibitions for local artists and photographers, hosting monthly music nights featuring many and varied bands and DJs, creating and curating screenings for film makers, running a tiny but semi-successful record label and operating an ever growing zine on our busy website (40,000+ hits a month!) we offer a range of professional services including:

• Website design and hosting.
• Merchandising and manufacture.
• Publicity material design and printing.
• Photography services.
• Live sound engineering.
• Events Management.
• Artistic direction.
• Copyright services.

The tail end of 2007 and into the new year sees us readying the relaunch of our site with a new design and lots of exciting new features and contributors. We’re also expanding our offices and stepping up in the level of operations. The range of services on offer will be strengthened, as will our public activities with regular new events planned at The Amersham Arms and New Cross Inn (both in New Cross), The Birds Nest in Deptford and the Deptford Arms, plus the creation of new art spaces in unsuspecting places across South East London and beyond.

We are continuously searching for more artists to join us and always welcome people willing to help. If you have any questions, would like to be involved, or to simply voice your opinion please feel free to contact us.

Company History

Initially conceived of in 2003 in and around the fine drinking establishments that pepper the Edgware Road (a peculiar start then for a collective now so imbued in the burgeoning South East London scene), The BLD was born of a desire for change (as in alteration, not 'spare any....?').

After myriad dipsomaniac conversations regarding artistry, commerce and the way they interact, founder members Phil Lymer and Simon Little decided to set about creating some sort of confluence of the many streams of consciousness that the duo had regarding creativity.

Corporate sponsored art events, the bandwagonising of 'cool' being attached to unsigned bands by the mainstream media, music press owned by the music industry, the major industry's orgiastic moneylust (songwriters with holes in their shoes while the A&R men that 'discovered' them are off playing golf on their yachts), the increasing rapidity of mainstream assimilation of alternative artforms (mostly in an attempt to sell us yet more extraneousies through wheel reinvention); it was these immoralities that were to be non-countenanced.

After months of speculation about trying to start an independent forum for creative arts, ideas were honed and the feelers were put out. Ignoring the initial glut of confused reactions our concepts received, a fine cadre was assembled and the mission began proper.

A small but beautiful website was created and launched in early October 2005, very much a kernel of the busy hub that awaits visitors here today. With the obscenely generous help from Carl Lawrence at 2bob. and Caffy St. Luce from the Music Tourist Board we began booking shows at The Fox and Firkin in Lewisham, South East London. Interestingly, the first show we ever put on featured Bretton, Popular Workshop and William on stage, as well as visual work from Docksud and Ryan Davies, all of whom have since gone on to bigger better things… Sign of things to come? Good omen or mere good fortune?

Since then we have spread our unique brand of sweet loving across many London venues (well, New Cross Inn, Dirty South, The Grey Horse, The Montague Arms, Metro Club, The Windmill, The Albany Theatre, The Birds Nest, Deptford Arms, Goldsmiths Student Union, Buffalo Bar, The Amersham, Notting Hill Arts Club, ULU, and Climate Of Change), had the good fortune to work with many great bands and artists (check out our Profiles section to see our current rostrum), have been involved in the running of some of South East London’s biggest festivals and alldayers (ARTFUL, Rocklands Party's and Foxfest spring to mind!), had fun releasing our fist E.P (for kick-ass stadium rockers Chet, now sadly defunct), set up several galleries and exhibition spaces, screened films from an international body of contributors and have worked closely with our customers to ensure their total satisfaction.

We have grand plans for expansion over the coming months with lots of exciting new goings on to be announced soon.

The future’s bright! The future’s Blue...
